Book it! June

Does anyone remember the Pizza Hut Book It Program from school?  If I remember correctly, you had a button (like flair) and each time you read a book you got a star sticker to put on your pin.  Once you filled up the spaces on a pin you got a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

I’ve always been a big reader so I didn’t need a reward – though I definitely was excited to earn my pizza.

I have a Nook that makes it easy to read under the covers because Lo says that even a tiny flashlight makes it hard for him to fall back to sleep if he wakes up and I’m still reading.  (you know how sometimes it feels like you’ve been awake for hours even though you probably fell asleep for awhile in between wakings – I think that’s what’s going on…)  Not only is the Nook lit up, I don’t have to worry about turning the pages under the covers.  Kelley also gives me books to read that she liked.  These are harder to read under the covers.  I’m also more than a year behind of lots of magazines (mostly cooking or workout magazines that don’t really matter if they are current).

Currently I read most nights for 30+ minutes before going to sleep (more like 60-90 minutes when reading 50 Shades of Grey series).  Obviously the Nook is easier to read in bed, but I want to read the regular books too.  Loren asked me why I wasn’t using the Nook last night and I said I wanted to read this book.  Then I fretted that maybe I should read the paper books on our commute (he drives) – but then when would I read my magazines!??  Currently on our commute I catch up on Words with Friends, read Facebook, and then pull out a magazine that I stash in his car.

So I still don’t have a solution, so it’ll probably remain a combination of all.

But this is what I’ve read recently (I think I’m forgetting a few since the last time I wrote about books).

  • Save Me by Lisa Scottoline – This was good, but not excellent. There were some parts of the plot and characters that I didn’t really think made sense.  Wouldn’t it be any mother’s natural instinct to save her own child first – especially if her child had the least chance of being able to save herself?  And could people really be mad about that?

  • Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James – Oh boy.  This was G-R-E-A-T.  The writing wasn’t amazing, but I suspect most people aren’t expecting a Pulitzer Prize winner here.  It’s not a perverted as some people expect and I really didn’t think was all about sex – there was a lot more to the story than that, for sure.  Being a psych major, I’ve always found “deviant” behavior interesting – not so much the behavior, but the reasons behind it.  I kept having to remember how short a time frame the story across the series was set in – like months – because a ridiculous amount of unusual things happened in that time frame.  The ending kind of sucked, but I’m not sure what a good ending would be for a book like that.  When you’re disappointed for it to end, it’s a bummer no matter what.  (By the way, the paperback trilogy is on Amazon for less than $30 if you can’t get your grubby hands on the series).  We’ve been trying to figure out a good character to play Christian in the movie.  I guess Chris Pine (?) is a top runner (I didn’t know who he was either) – I could see that maybe.  Here’s PolicyMic’s top 20 list – to be honest, I would barf if 1/2 of these guys were picked (Ryan Gosling, the Spiderman Guy, Justin Timberlake, Chad Michael Murray, Joshua Jackson, Colin Farrell, to name a few).  Yes, I can’t stand Ryan Gosling – there, I said it.  Nor would I want any Twilight star to be involved…  I don’t know who Matt Bomer is, but he has a good look.  I swear, I just looked up Chris Pine and Ian Somerhalder and I think they are the same person….?  Either one would do I guess.  It’s a hard role because I don’t think it can be a super-well-known actor because it would be hard to forget about other characters he’s played.  I think Kelley wants Channing Tatum or Tatum Channing.

Speaking of Magic Mike – I think between that movie and this book, lots of babies are going to be born in the spring of 2013.

Who do you think should play Christian Grey?
