From the mouth of Jenson: January 2016

January was a month of lots of change for Jenson.  It was his first month as a big brother and dealing with all of the adjustments that went along with that.  He did great, and was still as funny and sweet as always.

When Jenson really started talking, he was constantly cracking us up with things he would say, or surprising us with his verbal skillz.  I bought this wall calendar that has blank lines on the top page, and the calendar at the bottom and hung it in the kitchen, so that we could record milestones or funny things that happened through the months so we wouldn’t forget.  I included some of the stuff in Jenson’s monthly updates, but I thought I’d backtrack to add these notes to the blog, especially since I don’t do monthly updates for him after he turned two.

January 2016

  • “No poke eyes” The day after we brought Marlowe home from the hospital, Jenson was holding her on the couch in between Lo and his mom.  He knew to be gentle with her and had been doing a great job, but he poked her eye, not hard, just out of curiosity.  Everyone kind of reacted and Lo said something like “no, no, no!” kind of loud (just because that’s his voice) and it scared Jenson.  I was across the room and I just saw his face crumple and it totally broke my heart.  I honestly think he didn’t realize what he was doing or that it could hurt her – he was just curious of her shiny eyes – like a doll.  I went over and swooped him up as he started bawling, because I can’t help myself when he’s truly upset like that.  I even teared up because the shock and sadness in his face just killed me (and probably because I was 4 days postpartum). I think the whole situation scared him and he felt bad that he could have really hurt her.  We talked to him gently about how we can’t poke her eyes or her face because it could hurt her.  He totally got it and never did again, but when we were talking about Marlowe or he was holding her for the next two months or so, he’d regularly say “no poke eyes”.

  • “OK” He started saying this constantly in response to everything
  • Me during lunch after he ate all of his grapes: (Are the grapes in your belly?) “They’re in my mouth”
  • “Mom! Dad! It’s broke!” (his fire truck) He started randomly calling us mom and dad.  I have no idea where he got that from – we say mommy and daddy to him.  But when he’s in a hurry or trying to tell us something – it’s mom and dad, and it cracks us up and makes us sad at the same time because it makes us think he’s growing up too fast.
  • “I don’t want to poop in the potty”.  We started talking to him about potty training and having him sit on the potty in the bathroom while he had his clothes on. (Turns out he still doesn’t want to poop in the potty)
  • While my family was visiting, Marlowe had a checkup and my sister Christine asked “Jenson, do you go to the doctor?” He said “Yes”.  She asked “what does the Dr say?”.  He did even hesitate and said “No more monkeys jumping on the bed”.
  • He likes us to kiss his boo boos, so when he fell one day he said “I hurt my butt – I need you to kiss it”.
  • “I want to eat the straw paper” We were out to eat somewhere and he said this.  I have no idea why he said it, but I didn’t let him eat it anyway.
  • While taking a bath….”please wash my bum” and “that tickles” as I did.  And then “Please wash my bum again”.  Um, no.
  • “1, 2, 3, 4” as he was counting the rolls on my stomach while I was nursing Jenson.  Thanks, kid.
  • “Mommy, close your shirt”.  Apparently my stomach rolls are offensive.  Sorry I’m not ripped like you, lol.
