My Groupon account was hacked

My Groupon account was hackedMy Groupon account was hacked today.  I got an email today from Groupon saying that a change was made to my account:

Hi Valerie,

A request was recently made to change your email on your Groupon account. If this was done in error, please visit your Groupon account to cancel the request. Otherwise, you may simply delete this email.

Thanks,
The Groupon Team
www.groupon.com

My initial reaction that this was spam and it was a phishing email trying to get me to log in to my account through the link (removed above) so they could get my info.  I decided I should log into Groupon just in case to make sure my account looked okay.  I couldn’t get into my account with my normal password at first, but then somehow I did, and sure enough, there were two pending purchases for netbooks totaling about $1200.  I was actually able to cancel the purchases and remove my stored credit cards so no other purchases could be made, but when I tried to change my password, it wouldn’t let me back in.  Probably in the meantime that I was changing this stuff in my account, the thief had changed my account email address, so even with the changed password, I could no longer get in to my account.  I also could have a new password sent to my account because my email was no longer connected to it.

I called Groupon and after going through lots of hoops for them to find my account (since it’s not longer attached to my email and that’s how they store the accounts) they said the orders did get cancelled and that there no pending charges and my credit cards were removed from the account.  They also recommended that we alert the credit card company, even though it was unlikely they were able to recover our entire credit card number since it’s encrypted other than the last 4 digits.  Lo was already handling the bank part and they are sending us new cards – which is totally annoying to have to change automatic payments.

A couple of thoughts on this.  I’m a dumbass because I shouldn’t keep my credit cards stored in accounts like that since I don’t make purchases all that often.  But most importantly – Groupon needs to have better procedures to protect their customers.  I’m sure the thief didn’t get my password right on the first try (it’s not obvious and was a mix of letters and numbers).  If they had to try more than 3-5 times, my account should have locked and Groupon have sent an email letting me know that someone tried to log into my account the wrong password.  If it was me, there should be a link that I could verify that it was me (and force a password reset).  Also, if Groupon stores my account through my email address, no one (including me) should be allowed to change my email connected to the account – unless I contact Groupon to arrange a change.  Yes, it’s annoying to have to contact a company to make a change, but how many times should someone need to do that?  If a company is going encourage customers to store their credit card info under the pretense that it’s safe, there should be ways to prevent someone from hijacking someone else’s account.  There also wasn’t a way to report fraud on the Groupon website.  I guess that isn’t super important because it’s something that should require a phone call, but if I wasn’t able to call immediately for some reason, there should be a way to report it immediately – even when I cancelled the orders that I placed, there should have been an option to say that (which would temporarily disable my account).

So if you have your credit card info stored in Groupon, I’d delete it if I were you – they don’t have enough safeguards in place to prevent someone from using your card from within the site and changing your email address and mailing address – especially now that Groupon sells lots of goods, like netbooks and laptops, which are prime credit card theft purchases because they are valuable and easy to resell.  I definitely appreciate that they sent the email letting me know a change was made to my account, but that change shouldn’t have been possible in the first place.

Groupon is a dying business model anyway, and I’m sure they are more concerned with keeping up their profits than protecting their customers as they start to phase out of daily deal model.

  • I just had this happen but have been unable to find a phone number to contact them. I have had to close my debit card (I know, stupid to use a debit card, but never have had a problem!). Can you tell me where you found a contact number???

    • Sorry to hear that! I found it under the “customer support” at the bottom and clicked “contact us”. The number I called is 1 (888) 375-5777 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm CST). They really need to do something about their security!

  • This just happened to me as well, and the thief bought 3 computers and a camera, changed my shipping address, and my email address. Groupon never contacted me to say, hm we think this is weird, is this really you making these purchases/changes? Sure, it’s easy to cancel purchases on Groupon, but why are they letting these purchases go through in the first place? You’re not a dumbass for storing your credit card info- I did/do the same thing, because we are constantly reassured it’s safe. I guess we learned the hard way. It’s sad when businesses fail us like this.

Also, I was really frustrated about not being able to contact them immediately to report the fraud. I had to wait until 11am EST to finally get someone on the phone.

    • It was a major pain in the ass and they didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with letting email addresses be changed without sending a confirmation (to the original email address) that you approve the change. It’s a simple, one-step verification. Considering they THEMSELVES have our information stored by email address, it shouldn’t be able to be easily changed. Everytime I called or emailed when I was trying to fix this, I had to tell them the last 4 digits of my credit card and the last purchase I made (luckily it was in the prior 2 months, so it was easy to find) because they kept trying to search by my emailed address – which was changed with the hacker. It also pisses me off that they don’t give you the option of NOT storing your cc number. If you make a purchase, it automatically stores it, and you have to go back and delete it manually. Glad yours worked out okay too.

  • This has just happened to me. The person accessed my groupon account and bought 2 laptops. I was able to go in and cancel those orders. I also canceled my cards on the account.

    • Also I’m not sure if this is something that the cops should be notified of. I have their address and everything.

      • Since the purchases didn’t go through, I doubt the cops would do anything about it since the fraud was prevented. You could always call and ask though.

        • Heh, if that’s the case then maybe I should have let the fraudulent transaction go through so the cops could do something about it.

If anything, I’ll probably send the guy who used my account a letter, “I know who you are, I know where you live, and I know what you did. I’ll be watching you from now on.” Haha!

          • You should ABSOLUTELY send a letter. Just lie and tell them that you reported them to the authorities and they will be coming after them soon. Maybe that will stop them for a minute.

  • This also happened to me today 4/17/2013 around 8am PST. The hacker bought 4-5 laptops, and one camera. I called groupon, and they were able to cancel all the orders. In fact, they can only cancel orders placed in the last two hours. Anything beyond that, they cannot do anything. Then I asked them to lock my groupon account, or give me back the control. Guess what they said. They cannot lock an account even after it is hacked. There are some other department inside groupon can do that, but they are not allowed to give out the number. They CANNOT even forward this hack activity to proper department.

Why groupon allows these criminals still hold a hacked account, which has a valid credit card on profile? I contact my amex, and had it replaced, and will need go through all pains for automatic payment merchants.

Is anyone know how we can report this type incident to a proper police department? I also would like to BBB groupon on their practice. Anyone has any info to share?

    • This is crazy – it’s happening constantly now! Groupon really needs to get a handle on their security or make some policy changes. It sucks to have to cancel a card and reschedule automatic payments for everything.

You could always call your local PD and ask if anyone handles internet crimes/fraud – or who does. My charges didn’t go through, so I technically don’t have a “crime” to report. And BBB is also a good option. Definitely tell all of your friends/family to delete their credit cards from their accounts!

And everyone should email Groupon and tell them how their “security” is failing and they aren’t protecting their customers.

  • This just happened to me today. I was able to get back in and change everything back very quickly and cancel the charges within 2 hours, but still a pain in the butt. It’s Saturday so Groupon was closed. And my bank wasn’t very helpful. Said I had to wait until Monday to file a claim. They racked up about $1000 worth of stuff on groupon goods. I did file a IC3 fraud report and local police report as well, even though the fraud was prevented. I felt like I could use all the documentation I could once all my bill payments are bounced and I’m charged overdraft fees because of these pending charges that are going to take days to fall off. I wasn’t going to file with BBB but hearing all of these stories I definitely think I will.

  • Mine too! Wow…all I did was google “My groupon account was hacked” and found so many with the exact same issue. Mine took place on 4/20/2013 – of course a Saturday so I couldn’t call Groupon when I received the email. I agree – it would simply solve the problem if they made you call to change “the email associated with your account”. They have not been very helpful or concerned. I deleted my Amex card from the account and have requested a new card from Amex. Yes, complete pain for automatic payments (with reputable, secure businesses!). I also filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office. There is a law in Massachusetts (201 CMR 17) that requires all businesses that store personal information of Massachusetts residents to have security systems in place. As far as I am concerned, Groupon is violating that law! I am going to provide the link to this site to the AG’s office as well as proof it is an ongoing issue. Probably won’t do much, but it will make me feel better! Oh, and no more Groupons for me!!

    • That’s a good idea to report to the AG’s office – they are more likely to be able to do something as opposed to local police departments. I just can’t believe with as many time this is happening that Groupon hasn’t changed their policy yet – it would be SO simple. Hacking is going to always happen, but they need to make things a little more secure to benefit the customers rather than the hackers!

  • Just happened to me…someone bought bunch of ipads and changed my login info. Had t o cancel my credit cards. What a pain. .

  • This just happened to me today (5/3/2013) as well. Someone used my Groupon account and purchased a camera, disk drive, etc. Groupon needs to fix its security problem. This is not acceptable.

  • I just called my credit card company and they told me that they received 5 transactions = ~$4K worth of charges from Groupon. I have been calling Groupon for the last 5 hours but heard no response in what and how it happened. I am disappointed by how ineffective and insecure Groupon is. If Groupon can’t be secure, it should not be in the internet business!!

    • Just happened to me – over 5 transactions totaling over $3000. No one to talk to as it’s a weekend. I did get a reply from customer service – they are checking it – 7 hours later and no real answer. Same technique as the others. No safe guards in place for the consumer. I just cancelled my credit card. Shocked to read that this has been going on for over a year to so many people. I already posted on my FB page and on twitter. I suggest that other people to the same.

    • Same here…. clearly they are doing nothing about it. These holes in their security could be fixed by a competent IT team in a day. It’s clear that Groupon doesn’t care or this would have stopped months ago. All of us are going through a bit of hell with cancelling cc cards, spending hours on the phone with morons… totally unacceptable. I killed my Groupon Account. Ready to press charges against the person that charged a computer to my account… jeeze…!!!!

  • I suggest we bombard Groupon’s FB page with our complaints. I just posted mine. I can’t believe they have allowed this to keep happening.

  • Our groupon account was hacked over the weekend. We cannot get anyone to call us back. This just seems a little crazy to me.

  • They do it on the weekend because they know customer service is closed and we can’t call to cancel the charges before the two hour window. Groupon needs to get their act together.

  • yesterday someone somehow got into my Groupon Account, changed the email address and the name on the account but left my credit card as the funding source. They promptly ordered a Dell Laptop to be shipped to their address in Arkansas. I live in California. I called Groupon, the guy on the other end claimed he saw what was happening and claimed he was able to kill the transaction since it had happened an hour previous. The $500 charge is still pending on my bank statement. Groupon needs to tighten things up but they never will. . It looks like it’s really easy to hijack anyone’s Groupon account. I had them shut down the account…. I’m done with Groupon…! What a crappy company. As of this moment I have no email from them even verifying that ANYTHING happened… Wasted 2 hours of my time talking on phone with the bank and Groupon….. which generally sucks. Ruined my friday morning… argh…!

I see that I’m the 14th person on this blog… we’ve all had the same thing happen to us. It’s pretty clear that Groupon does nothing to shore up the easy access hackers have to our information… they clearly don’t care.

  • This same scenerio has been going on for upwards of a year from what I read. It’s always the same. Hacker accesses password somehow, changes email to his, orders expensive computers or cameras, changes shipping address to his. Owner of hacked Groupon Account (Me ! or You ) gets a charge on their credit card or debit card for anywhere from $400 to $5000 or more. Then you spend weeks dealing with Groupon and canceling your credit cards. Groupon has done nothing to shore up these accounts from hackers. They could have done it in the first month it happened but have done nothing since it’s obvious from this blog account and others that it continues to happen month after month. If this was happening at Amazon they would have revamped the site accounts within hours. It’s clear to me that Groupon simply doesn’t care about this. They have broken the law actually. Class Action anyone..? I’ve pushed this story on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites where the Groupon Victims (and we are victims actually) are mulling over what to do about this. . On your bank statement for the Groupon charge is a phone number to call… this is the best number. There is actually someone on the other end… it just takes eons to get through. It’s one thing when you get jipped out of a two fer at the burger joint… but quite another to have seasoned criminals hitting your bank acct. or CC acct. for thousands of dollars. That is entirely criminal. So, wake up Groupon…….

    • Is bhere a class action lawsuit? I’d like to join. Fraudulent Groupon charges of almost $800 to my cc went thru. My cc compamy Capital One won’t credit me back nor will groupon 🙁

  • I am also a victim to this groupon hacker scam. Someone got into my account and changed my password then charged $1400 of i don’t know what to my debit card. I don’t ever remember checking a box to save my card number- it should not be legal for them to have this info after the fact. Class action I say.

  • Adding myself to this list, happened a couple hours ago. My Groupon account was linked to American Express and they tried to make almost $10,000 worth of purchases in 15 minutes. Watches, sunglasses, perfume, sneakers, laptops, cameras. Amex alerted me via text and email immediately (literally within minutes of it happening) and at almost the same time I noticed an email from Groupon saying my account info had changed. I am locked out of my account, and hoping that i never linked my bank card to Groupon.
I opened the Groupon app on my phone and was able to see the email address that it was logged in under – barau61123 at outlook dot com. All the purchases were pending.
Thankful that AmEx was completely on top of it. I sent Groupon an email that won’t be seen until Monday, sent them a message on facebook to which the response was “how frustrating. Email support at and they’ll try to help you.”
Totally unacceptable that this has gone on this much, ditching Groupon the second I get them on the phone Monday morning.

  • Hi all, this happened to me as well. Today, actually. Today is a Sunday, and Groupon is closed. I was unable to login to Groupon with a user name/password. Fortunately I had my Facebook login connected and was able to get in that way. I canceled their purchases ($900 for a Laptop, Cell Phone, and 5 Armani Cologne packages), canceled my debit card, and the bank reversed all charges immediately. I changed my Facebook password, email password, etc. I do not yet have the ability to change the email/password info on Groupon however. Fortunately the hacker was stupid enough to order something BEFORE changing the email address on file, which alerted me that I had purchased an HTC One Smartphone. I removed my name/address from Groupon’s files, I removed my stored credit card, and I emailed support@groupon.com stating all that had happened and requesting a phone call ASAP.

My suggestion – if you cannot login to Groupon, check to see if your Facebook is linked. I am in full support of any formal action that will bring about a change in their privacy/account security measures. Best of luck to you all.

  • WOW this just happened to me today (Sunday) and my credit card company (amex) is down from 12am-1am – how annoying. And of course Groupon can’t be reached. Is there anything I can do since my Groupon account isn’t linked to facebook??? so annoyed. I also have groupons I haven’t used yet. I will be asking for a refund.

    • Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until you can talk to Groupon and AMEX probably. Good luck- this is out of control!

  • Looks like I’m in good company. I got a delivery today of a brand new Acer laptop. Unfortunately I get so many Groupon emails everyday I moved them to junk folder…. otherwise I would’ve seen that there was a purchase on 6/27 for $989.00 for this beautiful laptop that, um, I didn’t order.
So now I get to go through the fun of sending it back and dealing with Groupon and my debit card getting reimbursed.

Guess I’ll change ALL my passwords now, too.

    • You’re probably fortunate that it was shipped to your house. Most of the hackers change the mailing address to their address, so the victims never see the items (not that it’ll be fun for you to return though).

      • True… but still annoying.
Looking back though, I guess I should concentrate on the fun it was thinking someone sent me a nice gift in the mail today. Nothing like an unexpected UPS delivery and getting to open all of the boxes… until I realized I paid for it and, oh, it’s a computer.

        • My favorite was the reply I got this morning from Groupon.

(on a sidenote, after actually SPEAKING to someone I’m able to get a refund and they sent me a packing slip to print out. I was just taken aback that this was their answer to a $1K purchase I didn’t make, especially the part where they okay’d me to give the computer to a worthy recipient)

          Hi ——-,

Sorry for any trouble. Sometimes customers accidentally make purchases using the Groupon mobile app on their phone. If you have a smartphone and use our mobile app, this may be what happened.

If you have the iPhone or iPad app, you can avoid this in the future by setting a 4 digit passcode in the profile tab of the app. This will require the code to be entered any time the app is launched. Additionally, you can cancel most unprinted Groupon purchases by editing your order in your account until midnight the day the deal closes. Groupon Goods orders can also be cancelled within 2 hours of purchase, and you can cancel a GrouponLive deal until midnight the day of purchase. Please keep in mind that you must use a computer to cancel your order; unfortunately this feature is not yet available on the app.

After seven days, all Groupon purchases are final. Unfortunately, because you have contacted us outside of the return window, I am not able to offer a refund in this case. Groupons make great gifts, so if you’re not able to use it yourself, feel free to give it to a worthy recipient. You can always give an unused Groupon to a friend unless otherwise specified in that deal’s Fine Print. GrouponLive vouchers can also be gifted as long as you contact us with the recipient’s name 24 hours prior to the day of the show.

However, there is good news! This product is on its way.

If you’d like, you can keep an eye on your shipment’s progress by visiting http://www.ups.com/WebTracking/track. Your tracking number is ———-.

Thanks for your patience, and please let me know if you have any more questions.

          Regards,

  • This just happened to me last night! (July 10, 2013) Almost $300 of gross perfume was attempted to be purchased with my debit card 5 times in a row! Groupon doesn’t think this is an abnormal transaction??? I was able to cancel the transactions quickly, but also had to deactivate my debit card and redo all of my automatic bill payments. What a huge pain in the ass. I am deactivating my Groupon account since this seems to happen ALL THE TIME!!!! Thanks for the information you posted about this.

    • It’s pretty clear that Groupon doesn’t care. Glad you got everything cancelled. Setting up new automatic payments is SUCH a pain!

      • We really need to start one. Groupon obviously doesn’t care since it’s been going on this long and they haven’t done anything. I filed a complaint with the BBB and their reply was only, oh we’re sorry this has happened and some other nonsense.

  • Just happened to me also this morning. I was fortunately able to find Groupon’s phone number and call and have my account deleted immediately. I had two forms of payment listed – one old invalid credit card and a card I had to cancel because I use it all the time. I will never store payment options on the web anymore. I use Amazon a lot for purchases so I logged in and deleted all my payment info. What is the best fraud reporting agency to give the fake email address the hacker created that has my name as part of it? I have it. It’s a hotmail address.

  • This just happened to me. My email address was changed and I couldn’t get in to my account.

Interestingly, I can still access my app on my phone. When I opened the profile tab, it shows the new email address it was changed to. How bizarre! I googled the email and found a name, address, phone number and Groupon claims that they shut the whole thing down. Now, what that means, I don’t know but Groupon doesn’t offer that great of deals to continue to be with them.

NEVER store credit or debit card information on websites!!

FYI – the email the hacker changed it to was: content1@giangk0i.net

  • Happened to me too on 8/3/13. I was able to cancel one of the items purchased (a TV/DVD) but GROUPON is telling me they can’t refund me on the other purchase because it was more than 2 hours since the purchase was confirmed. It’s a known issue yet they don’t alert consumers. I’m working with my credit card company to dispute the charges. I deleted the app from my phone and the way I was treated at Groupon, I will not use them again.

  • This situation literally ruined my day. I was sitting at my computer researching when I received an email from Groupon saying that a request was made to change my email address and if it was done in error please cancel. Well I went ahead and tried to cancel, but it was too late. The scum had already taken control of my account and I ended up getting locked out. I was able to get back in to my account by using the scum’s email and my password that was on file. I then deleted my two cards on file and noticed that they had already made a purchase using my credit card. I hurried up and canceled the order that the idiots placed, which was for a phone or tablet of some kind. Thank goodness I was able to cancel. I then had to call both my credit card company and bank to change both cards. I learned my lesson not to keep credit cards on file with these online companies.

This experience has seriously left a bad taste in my mouth for Groupon. If you do not care enough to protect the customers who keep your business going, then you need to shut down. I am ticked and what made matters worse for me is the fact that Groupon is closed on weekends. I hate when I need to handle business and the business is closed. I feel helpless.

      • It really is unfortunate. I contacted Groupon via email and their solution was to disable my account. If I want to use my account then I’d have to use another email address. I don’t think I will use them for awhile.

  • Just happened to me, 09/20/13. Someone charged five 12 +1 month Xbox Live subscriptions to my account. They didn’t bother to change any of my information. Contacted Groupon, which closed my account and told me a refund is in processing and would appear on my credit card statement in four days.
Then contacted credit card company, canceled the card, opened a dispute, they also said they would credit my account back in four days.

  • Happened to me 10/17/2013 Groupon security is a joke.
They care about making $ that’s all . Once they will start loosing customer than they will realize that security and trust from customer is important.

  • My account was hacked on 10/17/13 as well. Four charges were made over the span of 5 days, but only 2 went through. Seems after the last 2 were “rejected” the thief deleted the account. Was able to get in touch with Groupon. Hopefully things get resolved soon, especially since the fradulant charges were huge. Was told iPads were sent to a San Jose, Ca address. Thief used my street addres. When I looked it up, the address doesn’t exist in San Jose. How can something be delivered to an address that doesn’t exist!! I am a bit peeved my credit union didn’t contact me to verify these large charges. Was told by one of their representatives that maybe Groupon is not on their list of fradulant website. And yet more reputable stores are on that list??? Even the rep said the charges should have been flagged just based on their amounts. Groupon was a bad mistake. Wish I knew about all the security issues with this website.

  • I had my Groupon account hacked in October as well. Groupon must be getting better at fixing this. I told them I received their e-mail notification that my e-mail and password information had changed – earlier that day. The thief immediately made a purchase, as I got a notification on my bank account that an odd (large) purchase had taken place. When I checked my account and saw that it was a huge Groupon purchase, I called my bank first, while the transaction was still pending. (Totally relate to the post about cancelled debit cards being a real pain.) Groupon Customer Service fast-tracked me when they heard it was fraud. I had e-mailed and called at the same time, and they consolidated my ticket and had it fixed in 24 hours. They credited my account within 5 days, and my bank did it faster. Everybody was really helpful. They also cancelled my Groupon account, and gave me instructions on setting up a new one, safely. Needless to say, I haven’t opened a new one.

    • That’s great that they worked to get yours fixed fast. It’s unfortunate that the fraud is committed the same way in most cases and they haven’t bothered to put additional security measures in place. Even just making people either cancel their account completely or call in to change their email address would prevent most of the fraud that people are reporting. Also, not automatically storing people’s cc info without giving them the option of not storing it would be great.

  • I think I just got my account hacked too! Someone tried to purchase 3 pairs of Beats by Dre and a email was sent to my email. I have never made that purchase! Thank God I used a prepurchased debit card to make my two purchases on Groupon and not a credit card! The thief’s purchase was rejected because I didn’t have enough money on my card lol.. But now I’m locked out of my account and I can’t access one of the groupon’s I did actually purchase! Sent a e-mail but its the weekend so going to have to wait to call tomorrow. Ugh! Never again will I use Groupon!

  • This has just recently happened to my account too. 35k was attempted on my card… THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND. Thank god AMEX has measures in place that stopped it… never mind the multiple $500 charges that made their way through successfully before the card was frozen.

    • That is insane! I can’t believe Groupon still isn’t doing anything about this. They really, really don’t care about their customers.

  • Before I join the victims writing here, can anyone tell me how to delete my card from Groupon? I can not seem to find a way to remove them once they have been entered

    • Click on your name in the upper right corner. Go to “my account”. One of the sub-headings under my account is “credit cards”. You should be able to delete it there.
Ironic that Groupon makes it easier for people to hack accounts than for the account holders to get things straightened out and protect themselves from fraud.

      • Thank you for responding. Apparently you can remove your credit card information from your account via PC however the option is not available on Phones or Tablets.
The good news is Groupon responded quickly to my concern when i sent a message to them on Facebook.

  • Happened to me today…but the hackers have gotten worse. After stealing my card info and charging it to a gift (so it isnt refundable) they subscribed me to over 100 e-newsletters. Groupon DID respond to a Facebook post in about 30 minutes, so I am hopeful.

  • Just happened to me yesterday. The hacker was purchasing an iPhone with my groupon account. I was able to cancel the order right in time, but today I noticed my starbucks account being hacked as well. Delete all your stored credit cards from these websites and apps; especially if you’re using paypal as a default.

  • This just happened to me today. Ack!!! Groupon should know if there is a $738 purchase and then someone immediately changes their email address a red flag should go up. C’mon Groupon. We deserve better!

  • This happened to me too this year. They bought an ipad and tried to buy a laptop which was rejected. Luckily I got the email confirmation because my email wasn’t changed. They just changed the shipping address to (my name) 103 PADDY ROCK CT # 42 CARY, NC 27518. I filed a police report and everything INCASE they could do anything with the address. I also filed an internet crime report. Groupon was useless-you could tell it wasn’t news to them. Pathetic. Lesson learned never store cc info (this happened to my mom on Walmart.com too)

  • Here it is Oct 2014 and it is still happening. I caught it right away. Emailed off to Groupon support who was not unable to come up with anything for a week and a half. There was a 37minute wait on the phone. I do have a job. Also immediately I went into my credit card account and filed a fraud complaint stopping payment. I also sent a complaint with all the back-up info to a govt agency for fraud complaints. A lot of work on my part for a company who obviously have had this happening for a long time and haven’t bothered to make it impossible for address changes to happen or passwords to be changed without verification. Needless to say I removed my credit card from all other online accounts that may or may not have good security. Groupon canceled my account but have given me no solution for any unredeemed groupons that I actually did pay for–obviously I cannot access the vouchers. They aren’t even bothering to answer any of my emails — I guess I have to go back to the credit card company and file a complaint with them asking them if they could get a refund for me for those charges.

  • I’ve never had a Groupon account but a couple of days ago, a pending $1 charge showed up on my American Express card online account. I immediately clicked on the “watch this transaction” link, so I’d be informed immediately if the transaction posted, because I’m certain I haven’t done any business with Groupon and certainly haven’t ever given them my AmEx card number. I sign into and check my AmEx account every morning and, so far, nothing more has come of it but I’m at a loss to understand where that pending transaction would have come from. Anyone else ever experience anything like that or have any idea what may be going on?

  • It just happened me today. They deleted my debit card and suspended my account to avoid future hacks. They say the same thing to me that the credit cards are secured by encryption keys. No help from them. Its a mistake that I kept my debit card on the account. Well, I paid the price and I am not going back to them again.
With vast volume of this issue happening every month, they should have already put another security layer on top of what they have.

    • I forgot to include this in the previous post. This is the person hacked my debit card from their system and ordered things worth $450+. There was a series of emails from groupon stating 1. purchase is confirmed, 2. Problem with the order 3. Refund processing.
In one of the emails, I found the delivery address as below. I told Groupon customer care manager about the address. They didn’t pay much attention to that but informed me that my bank will take care of it when i file for the fraud charges.

  • I am so concerned about people that can’t afford to be robbed like this. It’s still happening. They tried to get $2000 out of my boyfriend. They wouldn’t be doing this if they weren’t occasionally successful. I know people that, if this happened to them, could go homeless with children. I would love to see them protected. I wonder if anyone would sign my petition to get them to change their security policies?

  • We too were just hacked & they purchased over $1,000 in goods & even more in cart. Groupon literally unreachable via phone (even though they claim to be), reply email sent a week after the fact (thanks Groupon! Time was clearly of the essence here so we child stop them!) & finally return email sent to the HACKER! finally, even later, we got email diminishing their liability & stating they wouldn’t help at all! This is absurd! YOUR SITE IS NOT SECURE! Otherwise there wouldn’t be a breach! Be warned people, they don’t care! This is not over Groupon! Signed, Very unhappy broke victim ex customers

  • Happened to me just found out today after my bank account went in the negative due to a purchase done on black friday. Can’t get in touch with anyone as their systems are over loaded (Thier message ) filed paperwork with bank and canceled my card. This is the worst time of the year for this to happen as I am already stretched financially and trying to stay afloat and provide a xmas for my kids.

  • Anyone know of an ongoing class action suit? They’ve locked me out of my account for 2 years and now want to give me the vouchers ‘credit’ and only after complaining to BBB. There’s no way I am letting them get away with this thievery.

    • I don’t know of any. Sorry you are still dealing with this after so long. I don’t understand why they haven’t tried to make things better. So many have had issues..
