2015 Halloween Events

Even though we are past Thanksgiving now, it’s not too late to post about Halloween, right?

We knew Jenson wouldn’t quite be into Halloween yet this year, but we wanted to go to a couple of events, and planned to go to our friends’ neighborhood on Saturday for trick-or-treating (mostly hanging out while they passed out candy, since Jenson doesn’t eat the candy anyway).  We were going to have Jenson to be Daniel Tiger for Halloween and my sister was making a hat for him.  I even found red converse for him to wear.

We decided to go to the local mall trick-or-treat event a few days before Halloween, and since we didn’t have the hat yet, I dug out a Monsters Inc. costume that was passed down to us.  He LOVED the monster costume.  He cried when Lo had to take it off so he could ride in the car to the mall (the jacket part was way puffy to fit in the car seat).  Something was going on with his costume and crocs, that he fell down at least 7 times within the first 5 minutes we were there.  Lo held his hand most of the time just to keep him upright.  He’d worn the crocs to play in several times, so they shouldn’t have been the issue.  It was so bizarre, but kind of funny.  He didn’t really “get” trick-or-treating.  He carried around his bucket and would let people put things into it, but he seemed suspicious about the whole thing.  We only stopped at a few of the stores – and only if there wasn’t a line. We just wandered around and checked out the mall.  It’s not a big mall and doesn’t have many impressive stores, but we’ve never been there so we wanted to see what it did have.  Jenson liked watching the kids, of course.

And he really enjoyed the fake deer outside of one of the stores, and the mannequin in Dick’s.

So even though he didn’t pay attention to the candy that people were putting into his bucket, when we got home, he promptly dumped out his bucket and was “sorting” his candy, and then put it back in.  He never asked to eat a piece or anything.

Two days later, we were invited to go to a trick-or-treat event at the church where Jenson’s friend’s daycare is located.  He was set on wearing his monster costume instead of Daniel Tiger.  Oh well, the Daniel Tiger hat that she made was intended to be a winter hat for him too, so he’ll still get lots of use out of it.  When we were getting ready to leave the house, I gave him his empty pumpkin bucket, and he looked in it and said “I need treats”.  I told him that’s what we were going to get.  Of course he was thrilled to be with his friends Jaxon and Emmy again.

The event had activities in different parts of the building, and trick-or-treat trail where people from the church set up decorating tables (it was a contest for them) and passed out candy.  It was supposed to be trick-or-trunk, and that part would be outside, but it rained, so they had to move in all inside.  I love how he’s looking at Jaxon in the first picture.  He looks up to him so much.

After the trick or treating part, he colored, decorated a mini pumpkin (and promptly took off the stickers as soon as we got home), and got a pumpkin painted on his face.  We weren’t sure how he’d do with that, but he sat really still for the girl.  By that time, it was almost 8 p.m., so we headed home.

On Halloween, we headed to our friends’ neighborhood for trick-or-treat.  Most of trick-or-treat in the area was scheduled for Thursday before Halloween, but since our friends’ neighborhood is a gated community, they do it when they want.  We just went with the monster costume because we knew he’d pick it anyway, plus it was pretty cold, and it was easy to layer clothes underneath without him having to wear a coat too.  Greg and Julie set up decorations and tables in their small cul-de-sac with their neighbors and hang out, drink wine, and pass out candy.  We hung out in the cul-de-sac for most of the time, but did walk him to several houses to trick-or-treat after a bit.  He was starting to get the hang of it finally and would hold out his bucket or pick a piece of candy.  People would tell him to take a handful and he would just take one little piece.  I guess because we hadn’t really given him any of the little bit of candy he’d collected so far, he didn’t really care how much he actually got.

We went back to their spot and hung out some more.  He had fun going up to their porch and picking a mum from the pot and bringing them it to me.  Over and over, one at a time.  He finally started giving them to one of the other ladies who was standing there too. He’s only wearing one glove in the pictures because he couldn’t pick the mums with his glove on.

It was getting late, so we headed home.  Next year he’ll be much more into it I’m sure, but he definitely had fun at the Halloween events nevertheless.
