Weekly Workouts: Jan. 5 – 11

I’m finally getting back into some good workouts – and NOT because it’s a new year – but because my knee if finally mostly better and I CAN do some hard workouts again.  I’m done with physical therapy and it only sometimes hurts, but I guess that’s still the bruised cartilage behind my kneecap – and PT wasn’t going to help that anyway.  My kneecap seems to be staying in place finally, so the PT exercises did their jobs.  Scheduling issues gave me a lot more “nothings” than I should have had, but I tried to work out hard when I actually worked out.  Weekend laziness isn’t unusual, so I’m not making excuses for that.

The good news is that our gym isn’t overly packed with New Year’s Resolution-makers who will only go for two months, not to be seen until next January.  Since it’s a private club and it’s literally hidden in the middle of a building without any outside signage, people don’t really know it exists.  My office window has looked out onto the building in which the gym is located and I didn’t know about it for seven years.

Saturday and Sunday, January 5 – 6

Monday, January 7

  • Noon – 7 Rounds Workout (21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3 reps): Squats, Mountain Climbers, and Pushups.  I did each exercise the prescribed number of reps and then started over again (no rest).  I love this because it’s a very quick workout but I’m breathing hard and red-faced afterwards.  I ended up doing some wall balls with 12 lb ball in place of a couple of sets of the pushups because I wasn’t sure how my elbow would feel after 84 pushups.  I did 25 minutes elliptical afterwards.

Tuesday, January 8

  • Noon – Nothing: I intended to go to Yoga at noon, but had an appointment in the morning and then was donating blood in the afternoon, so I didn’t want to spend an extra hour and 15 minutes at lunch for yoga – or there was no sense in me going to work at all.
  • 9 p.m. – Co-ed Volleyball:  We had our  whole team there so it would have been perfect to play one of the better teams.  Instead we played what had to have been the far worst team.  It was 2 guys and 6 women (2 rotating in) and most of the girls weren’t very good. Our guys couldn’t even swing hard at the ball because they were afraid of hitting someone in the face.  That sucks – don’t play in a Silver co-ed league if you don’t have basic skills (and it’s not even a strong league).  So it was boring and I didn’t break a sweat.  A waste of time.

Wednesday, January 9

  • Noon – 7 Rounds Workout (21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3 reps): Kettlebell Full Swings, One Leg Deadlift/Squats, Full Situps.  Same as Monday, different exercises.  I did each exercise the prescribed number of reps and then started over again (no rest).  Next I did 15 minutes elliptical and then a quick shoulder workout with 10 lbs: 2 rounds of shoulder raises, front raises, bent over row, bend over flys – reps until form failure, which ended up being between 6-15 depending on exercise.

Thursday, December 6

  • Noon – Nothing.  I ended up eating my breakfast (gf bagel, banana, and pb) and my stomach was upset for some reason, so I skipped.  I’m pretty sore from yesterday still.
  • 5:30 – Capital Club Yoga:  I was excited to get back!  I missed this class dearly, but our schedules haven’t worked out for like 2 months – we were just getting back from SK last Thursday.  It wasn’t as hard as normal because there was a new lady in class and she usually ends up scaling the workout back a bit.  I’m not complaining though – I was worried it would be crazy hard.

Friday, December 7

  • Noon – Nothing:  Our manager took me and my coworker out to lunch as a “thank you for hard work”/Christmas.  Our year end was no joke.
