Tony Roma’s Pulled Pork Review
I love having quick meal options when there isn’t time for anything else. Just because I’m home now, doesn’t mean I made it to the grocery store or remembered to thaw meat from the freezer to prepare dinner. And sometimes I’m just trying to get through the day and can’t even think about dinner until 6 p.m. I try to not to buy a lot of prepared food for a few reasons: it tends to be more expensive and unhealthy, and there are a lack of gluten-free options. My options for quick go-to dinners are limited and can get boring. I mean, grilled cheese is tasty, but its neither healthy or exciting. And since we’ve moved, there aren’t nearly as many fast food or take-out options nearby that sound good to both of us on any given day.
When I was given the opportunity to sample Tony Roma’s new line of All Natural Ribs and Pulled Pork, I was all for it. We LOVE pulled pork around here…and ribs, but we are too lazy to ever make ribs. Tony Roma’s is satisfying consumer demand for higher standards in pre-cooked refrigerated meat category with convenient meal options that meet clean label criteria and taste good. They have removed high fructose corn syrup and gluten from their products and have added new flavor profiles. The heat-and-serve meats are hand-trimmed and slow-smoked, and ready to eat in 20 minutes.
The samples I received to taste were the Tony Roma’s Kansas City Style Sweet Hickory Pulled Pork and the Tony Roma’s Original Baby Back Pork Ribs. We waited until one of those nights when it was 6 p.m. and we hadn’t thought of dinner and didn’t have any palatable options, so we pulled out the Pulled Pork to try. It happened to be my birthday and we decided not to go out to eat since we dined out all weekend. Lo talked about bringing home pizza, but that didn’t sound appealing to me, so he brought home the most important thing…ice cream cake from Whit’s.
We threw some tater tots in the oven, heated up the pulled pork, and microwaved some frozen vegetables. I wrapped mine in 1/2 of a gluten-free wrap, while Lo ate his on bread or a bun (I didn’t pay attention). Fancy birthday dinner, right? Doesn’t matter…it was good. The pork was super tasty – tender and meaty…with a thick sweet BBQ sauce that stuck to it. I’ve had ready-to-eat pulled pork before and the container had more sauce than meat in that brand, but that wasn’t the case this time. It was definitely pork with sauce, instead of sauce with pork. I get grossed out easily if I bite into gristle or something other than what I’m expecting when I’m eating meat, and I didn’t encounter any of that either. There was enough for 4 servings, so we happily had it the next day too. I would definitely buy this again – and maybe try the another variety like Tony Roma’s Kansas City Style Kickin’ Sweet & Spicy Pulled Pork. I love that I can keep these in my fridge for several weeks, or freeze them until I need a meal.
Next up is the Tony Roma’s Original Baby Back Pork Ribs. We only have ribs when our friend makes them for us because it seems like such a process to us. He does them well and I’m looking forward to seeing if these measure up!
